Sustainability at Vancouver 2010
December 18, 2009 · admin · Jump to comments
Most African nations will not be participating in the Winter Olympics, but this does not mean that they won’t be affected by the Vancouver 2010 Games. The Vancouver 2010 organizers will be funding wood-burning cooking stoves for Uganda as one of many projects to offset the negative impact of the environment due to the Olympics.
They are attempting to be carbon-neutral as estimates say that over 260,000 extra tones of carbon emissions will be produced from the Olympic events. Previous estimated came at 300,000 tones. Nevertheless, the Olympic Games are aiming for maximum efficiency in order to reduce this number even further. The direct effect of running all the events will produce around 118,000 tons while all the rest will be produced due to the many complementary activities like visitor travel and sponsored events.
The VANOC signed a deal with Offsetters, which is a company that does just that, offset carbon-emissions. Not only the Olympic Committee will be working with Offsetters but also 25 other partners. It is estimated that a couple from Montreal who want to fly to Vancouver to attend three events over four nights will be accountable for 2.46 tons of carbon emissions, according to a carbon calculator provided by Offsetters.
